From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky
Many thanks to all those Freshman parents for hosting
our Freshmen for our annual Freshmen Shabbaton,
which was a great success. Special thanks as
well to the Seniors for providing the direction and
ruach. The spirit will carry us to the exciting
Freshmen Trip to Boston, February 25-26. If you
have not yet sent in the check for this event, please
do so immediately
Eighth grade acceptances were mailed this week, which
means that next week will bring many eighth grade
boys to sit in on classes to help their decision-making
process. At the other end of the spectrum, any
Senior parent needing advice on helping your son select
an appropriate Yeshiva in Eretz Yisrael for next year
should please call to make an appointment with myself,
Rabbi Storch, or one of the Rebbes. Finally, we
are busy planning a trip for the Juniors to the YU
Seforim sale, followed by a leisure activity.
Have an inspiring Shabbat, and enjoy the long
weekend!
| Freshman Descend On Woodmere |
 |
The first year of High School is full of challenges, and
the Yeshiva is constantly working to ensure the
comfort and success of our Freshmen by running a full
year of programs and activities. One of the
highlights of the Freshman calendar took place this past
weekend at the annual DRS Freshman Shabbaton in
Woodmere. The Shabbaton actually began during
school on Friday, as the Freshman took over the gym
for over two hours of 3 on 3 tournament basketball.
Following the games, the students went to the homes
they were staying at. In a true show of hospitality,
Freshmen who live in the area hosted their classmates
from other locations. The entire Freshman class, along
with their Rebbeim, welcomed in the Shabbat with a
beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv in the DRS Bait
Medrash.
Following the meal, the Freshman kicked off the
theme for the Shabbaton, Kavod Habriot, which
also corresponds with the theme for the entire Yeshiva
over the next few months (see article below). The
Freshmen, with a little help from their Senior mentors
who joined the Shababton, were given props, a theme
within Kavod Habriot, and an assignment:
to develop the most entertaining and humorous skit
they could, while incorporating all the items. Each
team came up with some terrific results, and Rabbi
Kaminetsky, Rabbi Brazil, and Mr. Feldman had a hard
time deciding on a winner.
It was then on to Rabbi Emerson's house for an
incredible Tisch. With the chulent, kugel, snacks,
and all the singing, led by Rabbi Kaminetsky, there was
something for everyone. The group had the
distinct privilege of being joined by Rabbi Herschel Billet,
Rav of Young Israel of Woodmere, who spoke
about issues one faces in the realm of Kavod Habriot.
Shabbat Day continued the fun, as each shiur got
together with their Rebbeim for a repeat of the
famous "Freshman Melt-a-way Kiddush." The
group then split up for lunch, going to the homes of the
local Rebbeim.
Rabbi Stern's shiur had a special lunch together in the
Yeshiva. Shabbat concluded in a beautiful fashion, with
beautiful singing led by the Rebbeim. Rabbi
Emerson provided words of inspiration, as he told of the
time he lost his famous Star Wars action figure
collection.
The festivities continued on Motzai Shabbat, as
DRS hosted its annual "Freshman Night" at the JV
Hockey game against HAFTR. Besides watching an
amazing game (see Athletics Update), the Freshmen
enjoyed pizza and special Freshman-only promotions
during the intermission. The Shabbaton left the 9th
graders anxious for more excitement, as we
prepare for "Road Trip '04: Beantown," the Freshmen
trip to Boston, on February 25-26.

| Return to Hunter Mountain: DRS Ski Trip |
 |
It was dark and cold on Ibsen Street at 5:15am Sunday
morning-that is, everywhere except on a Monsey
Trails bus parked on the corner, full of almost 60 DRS
students and Rebbeim, ready to head north for a great
day in the snow. Yes, DRS was returning to
beautiful Hunter Mountain for its annual Ski Trip!
The group stopped along the way for Shacharit,
and to enjoy a delicious Dunkin Donuts breakfast.
After arriving at Hunter Mountain, all the skiers and
snowboarders got their equipment, and off they went
to the slopes. After a weekend full of snow, the
conditions were great.
The mountain was perfect for the group, as it offered a
wide range of runs, from beginner to expert, and
offered a ski school for those interested in lessons.
By the time 12:30 rolled around, everyone was
starving, and headed to the Ski Lodge for a
special 'all you can eat' lunch buffet.
After eating, it was back up the mountain, until the lifts
closed. Everyone had a great time. There was
even talk of making a ski Shabbaton next year, with
two days to ski!

| DRS Launches New Kavod Habriot Campaign |
 |
Whereas the very successful Mussar theme of the first
semester was Tefila, DRS is focusing on the
important theme of Kavod Habriot, respect for all
creations for the second semester of 5764. Rav
Ahsher Weiss kicked off the theme with a shiur from
Eretz Yisrael on January 1st, and each shiur now
spends fifteen minutes a day brainstorming of ways
to increase the role that Kavod Habriot plays in our
lives.
This was also the natural choice of theme for the
Freshmen Shabbaton. The boys were treated to an
overview of six elements of Kavod Habriot from
Tisch Guest Speaker Rabbi Herschel Billet, who
spoke of the importance of respect for inanimate
creations, non-jews, and even of future generations.
The Shabbaton really helped the boys bond together as
a group, elevating the level of respect from one to
another.

| DRS Hosts Annual College Night |
 |
College Night at D.R.S. brought together juniors
and
their parents for an informative evening as these
students approach their senior year. Our Menahel,
Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky, welcomed students and
families and described the "Israel option,"
encouraging each student to partake of a year (or
more) of Torah study in Israel prior to attending
college.
Principal Harvey Feldman gave an informative
discussion about curriculum requirements and
prospective electives in the senior year. Mr.
Stuart Rahr, our Assistant Principal, described the
new on-line SAT score reports that he had recently
introduced at D.R.S.
Our guest speaker was Ms. Chelsea Lavington of
CUNY, who spoke about the various CUNY colleges and
about the Scholars and Honors Programs at CUNY.
To make the college application process as
smooth
as possible next year, Mrs. Hefter, Dir. of College
Guidance, made available to each student a folder
containing SAT applications, bio. forms, requests for
letters of recommendation, and short/long calendars.
She spoke about the deadlines involved in completing
the application process and invited parents and
students to meet with her on an individual basis to
review next year's college options. There was a
lively question and answer period at the conclusion of
the program. The evening proved to be both
informative and enjoyable. Next, we'll be talking to
the Sophomores on Monday night March 15th.

| Israel Yeshiva Interviews @DRS |
 |
|
The Israel Guidance Department, under the
supervision of Rabbi Eli Storch, is working hard to
match each Senior with an appropriate Yeshiva in
Israel. To facilitate this process, the twelfth
graders had many visitors this past week. Five
yeshivot sent representatives from Eretz Yisrael
to give the boys bechinot . Rav Binah, from Yeshivat
Netiv Aryeh, Rav Taragin of Yeshivat Har Etzion and
Rav Gross from Maaleh Adumim were all in yeshiva on
Monday. On Wednesday, Rav Olshin from Yeshiva Torat
Shraga paid a visit, and on Thursday, Rav Gordon from
Yeshivat Ohr Yerushalayim came as well.
Most of the boys enjoyed the bechinot and used them
as an opportunity to meet another personality from
the Yeshiva that interested them. Next week Rav
Lebor from Yeshivat Shaalvim and Rav Berzon from
Shaarei Mevaseret Zion will come to interview the boys.
We wish all the boys luck and hatzlacha on getting
accepted to the Yeshiva of their choice.
DRS Sports Update
The JV hockey team did not lose their first game
this past Saturday Night, but they didn't win
either. It was a thrilling game against HAFTR that
ended in a 1-1 tie. The lone goal scorer for
the 'cats was a power play goal by Doni Ross which
came on a beautiful setup from Yitzi Lederman.
Perhaps the highlight of the evening was a save by
Yehudah Newman on a penalty shot which kept the
game deadlocked at 1-1. The Varsity Team beat
North Shore this week 8-1. The team rallied behind the
sparkling goaltending of Avi Zanjirian. Avi, on "Avi
Zanjirian Night," almost posted a shutout, giving
up his lone goal on a four on two in the 3rd period.
The Junior varsity basketball 'cats still have
yet to play a game in the second half. After two
intense practices this week, they are looking to
build on their 7-0 record this Motsai Shabbat at HANC.
The Varsity is looking to bounce back from its
tough loss to MTA with a victory over HANC in the
nightcap of the doubleheader.
As we get closer to the spring, our Tennis
team is starting to get ready. We welcome
Steve Brody as the new coach of our tennis team.
Steve has played and taught tennis for many
years, including a long stay on the Yeshiva
University tennis team. Tryouts for this year's
squad will be on February 27th after school. Look in
future articles for more details on the tennis team
tryouts.
A Book and A Buck!
The DRS Book Drive for Israel is now underway!
Israeli schools are in desperate need of English
books, and cannot afford to purchase any due to
budget cuts. Freshman Jeremy Watman
decided to do something about this problem, and
invented "Book and a Buck," where anyone can
participate in this worthwhile Chesed opportunity
by bringing in to the drop off in the DRS lobby any used
books and a dollar to cover shipping. Check the
"Quick Links" section below to download the
flyer with information about this important program.
Please help us make a difference!
We are hard at work preparing for the annual
class trips that each grade goes on. Kicking off
the program this year will be "Road Trip '04:
Beantown," the annual Freshman class trip to
Boston. In addition to visiting the basketball hall of
fame, meeting with the Bostoner Rebbe, and
visiting Rav Soloveichick Zt'l's Kever, among
other places, this year, we have arranged for a special
tour of historic Fenway Park! The trip will
take place on February 25-26, and it promises to be
amazing!
Some radical and exciting changes are in the
works for future trips as well, as we look
forward to our annual Sophomore Class trip on
March 17-18. Stay tuned for exciting details
about this once in a lifetime event!
On Wednesday, February 18th from 11:10- 12:44, the
10th and 11th
grades will be having a special presentation on the
Arab-Israeli Conflict, including the screening of the
movie "Relentless."
The presentation will take place in the Bait Medrash
and will
consist of a 45 minute video presentation followed by a
question and answer session. We would like to
invite all DRS parents
to partake in this opportunity. If you would like to
attend,
please call Rabbi Brazil at the Yeshiva 516- 295-7700
Ex.111. Please see the link below for more
information on this powerful film.
