| Welcome 8th Graders! |
 |
We welcome to our readership all the accepted
eighth grade students to DRS for 2004-2005.
Since acceptance letters went out on February 11,
Yeshiva has been a-buzz with visits from
prospective eighth graders from various Yeshivot
in the New York Metropolitan Area. This week saw
visits from boys from Tiferes Moshe, South
Shore, YCQ, Har Torah, HANC, and Yeshiva Derech
Hatorah.
The boys were escorted through a day of classes
by current student leaders, and were
treated to Breakfast in the Principal's office, and lunch
with the Menahel. We wish the eighth graders
luck with their decisions, and hope they will
choose to join the spirit and achdut of DRS! One
important reminder: the deadline for all
registration forms and checks is Monday, March
1st, so to reserve your spot in Yeshiva, please make
sure the form is in our office by that date!

| DRS Debate Team Triumphs! |

Our award-winning DRS Debate Team did it
again! On Thursday afternoon, our debate team
attended the debate tournament conducted by
HAFTR. Other schools that attended included
MTA, Kushner, Ramaz, SKA, Rambam, HANC and
Central H.S., among others.
We sent four teams, each comprised of two
debaters. Partners Noach Lerman - David Lasher;
Jonathan Hefter - David Pinn; Elly Warman - Isaac
Solaimanzadeh; and Michael Friedmann - Jonathan
Eskowitz, and each team won a round of
competition during the two rounds in which they
participated. Sophomores Eli Sklar and Dan
Shekhtikhin and Junior Yoni Weinberg
accompanied the team as reseachers and observers.
When the dust settled, senior David Lasher won a
trophy for Second Place Individual Best Speaker, and
D.R.S. as a whole, won First Place Best School!!
Congratulations to the team and Coach Mrs.
Hefter on a job well done. On to the Flatbush

| DRS Seniors Visit Matzah Factory |
 |
Pesach may still be one Yom Tov away, but Rabbi
Balsam's Senior shiur got a head start on
Thursday, paying a visit to the Chareidim Matzah
Factory, in Brooklyn, New York. The visit, which
provided a hands-on supplement to the Laws of
Pesach that the shiur had been studying, gave
the class a chance to learn about the intricate process
involved in the making of the Matzah, and they
even got to make some themselves!

| DRS Hosts Award-Winning Presentation |
 |
Unfortunately, we live in an age where Israel is not
only being attacked physically, but she is also
assaulted in the court of public opinion and the media.
To counter this trend, 10th grader Sandy
Fischman organized a special presentation by the
Israel Info Center, a media watchdog affiliated
with Aish Hatorah and the World Jewish Congress.
Mr. Robert Friedman, the Center Director,
presented the 10th-12th grades, and many DRS
parents, with an award-winning video
presentation, entitled "Relentless." This
documentary, produced by honestreporting.com
, shows the facts behind the Arab-Israeli
conflict, and displays how the Palestinian
Authority has failed to uphold their responsibilities in
the peace process.
The powerful video was followed by a question
and answer session with Mr. Friedman, in which
students learned of what practical means they can
employ in promoting equitable coverage of Israel. This
presentation will provide the students with
invaluable information that they can use throughout
the year in our HPAC programs, and the school-wide
Mission to Washington lobbying trip planned for
after Pesach.

R'Friedman's Shiur Turns Friday Into Shabbos! |
 |
|
As the 2nd semester rolls on, many of the prizes
won at the Chanuka Goods and Services Auction
are being given out. This past Friday, Rabbi
Friedman's 10th grade shiur cashed in on a well-
deserved Kiddush.
For an hour the shiur turned Friday into Shabbos,
complete with singing, divrei Torah, and, as they say,
"Mad Chulent Action," complete with Kishka.
Stayed tuned next week, when the famous
"Luxury Luncheon" is served to the lucky
winners!
DRS Israel Update
Our Israel Guidance Office continues to
operate at top speed. Besides assisting Seniors in
making decisions about Yeshivot for next year, we
hosted Rav Azarya Berzon, Rosh Yeshiva of
Sha'arei Mevaseret Tzion, and Rav Dovid Lebor, Ram at
Yeshivat Sha'alvim.
DRS Athletics Update
In chess news, the DRS Chess Team played an
exciting match against HANC that came down to
the last game. Tied 3-3, HANC pulled out a tough game
that lasted over two hours,
to win 4-3. However, DRS clinched a playoff
berth, and will play RAMBAM in the
first round.
With a week to go in the regular season three out
of our four sports teams were gearing up for the
playoffs. Our Junior Varsity Hockey team
(8-0-1) clinched first place in the Long Island
division with an impressive 5-2 victory over
HAFTR this past Thursday Night. Dani Ross
wowed the crowed with an impressive hatrick. His
moves were reminiscent of Joey Hirschel's goal in the
championship game three years go. The squad has
their final game of the year this Sunday at
Flatbush.
The J.V Basketball team kept their unbeaten
season alive this week as well. First on Motsai
Shabbat the J.V beat HANC by 20. Their
tenacious defense was too much for HANC as an early
lead for the wildcats led to a rout. The J.V then
ran their record to 9-0 with a win this Thursday night
at HAFTR. The game was never competitive and
the cats easily won 61-32. This Sunday at 1:30
the squad goes to play the 8-1 North Shore team in the
game that will decide first place in the division.
Stay tuned next week for the playoff matchups
and schedules of our teams.
A Book and A Buck!
"A Book and a Buck" is in full swing at DRS!
Under Freshman Jeremy Watman's direction, book
donations headed for Israel, have been coming into the
school at a rapid pace. Due to Jeremy's hard work,
with a little help from Rabbi Brazil, the school is
due to collect over 50 cases of books from
several large donors, in addition to the many boxes
filled by individual donations. Keep those books
coming!
The school is buzzing over two amazing
trips that will take place next week: Road Trip 04:
Boston, and a special 11th grade trip to the Yeshiva
University Seforim Sale. The Freshmen, In
addition to visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame,
meeting with the Bostoner Rebbe, and visiting
Rav Soloveichick Zt'l's Kever, will experience a
special tour of historic Fenway Park! This
exciting trip will take place on Wednesday and
Thursday, February 25-26.
The Junior class is gearing up for a new trip
to the Yeshiva University Seforim Sale, where they will
be able to purchase seforim to supplement
their Judaic Studies here at Yeshiva, and will hear a
special shiur from YU Rosh Yeshiva Rav Meir
Goldvicht. The trip will conclude at New Rock
City, with bowling and go-karts.
Some radical and exciting changes are in
the works for future trips as well, as we look forward
to our annual Sophomore Class trip on March 17
-18, and a redesigned school-wide Mission
to Washington lobbying trip. Stay tuned for
exciting details about this once in a lifetime event!
The DRS G.O. is ushering in Adar in grand
style! On Monday, Rosh Chodesh, the G.O. will be
sponsoring a special breakfast and Chagiga, with
a rare musical appearance by Rabbi Kaminetsky,
who will be accompanying the DRS band.
In a DRS first, the G.O. has organized a Talent
Show, complete with special mystery judges, for
students and faculty. Many individuals and groups have
been hard at work perfecting their routines for what is
sure to be a very entertaining event!
The DRS Alumni Association is off and
running! This Motzai Shabbat, Rabbi and Mrs.
Kaminetsky will be hosting the first annual Alumni
Melava Malka, at their home.
