From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky

We hope our Yeshiva family enjoyed the Purim ruach at Yeshiva, and the outstanding presentations on the history of Jews and Christians. There was outstanding Yeshiva spirit at last nights hockey playoff game, and everyone is invited to the JV Basketball playoffs on Sunday at North Shore and the JV Hockey playoffs Monday night at our gym against HAFTR.

Elisheva and I would like to invite all Sophomores to an Oneg Shabbat this Friday night at my home. This week is really turning into Sophomore week at Yeshiva, with the Oneg, the two playoff games, the Sophomore night for parents and students on Monday night, and of course, the upcoming amazing Sophomore Wilderness Expedition at Ring Homestead!

This week we send out third quarter report cards, which come with a check-off sheet for Parent- Teacher conferences. Please check off and fax or mail back your selections as soon as possible to allow us to schedule everyone's requests.

We look forward to greeting all of our parents at the Yeshiva dinner on Motzai Shabbat. A special Mazal Tov to Hillel and Rachayl Davis, Shabsie and Julie Schreier, and Yoni and Jamie Liefer on their well deserved awards. Most of all, the dinner is a chance to celebrate the great Torah partnership between parents and the yeshiva, and to thank the Ribono Shel Olam for all he has given our Yeshiva family.

Shabbat Shalom, and I look forward to greeting each of you at the dinner!

The Rosh Chodesh festivities were great, but as Purim drew near, the Yeshiva was buzzing with anticipation. After a fantastic megilah reading in the Bait Medrash by Rabbi Kaminetsky, the several hundred HALB students and parents moved to the gym, where the party began. The gym had tables set up, lined with food, and the cafeteria's tables and chairs were cleared away, for some amazing dancing.

For over an hour, Rabbeim, students, parents and friends sang and danced. They were entertained by many costume-clad participants, including Superman, Elvis, and a Leprechaun. Just as the dancing was about to stop, Rabbi Moshe Weinberger from Congregation Aish Kodesh paid us a surprise visit, dancing and singing with the revitalized crowd.

As the tired dancers took a break, everyone sat down to watch Natan Farber & Shimon Ganz and crew put on this year's Purim skit. It was truly a sight to behold - and laugh at! Between Natan and Shimon's acting, and technical mastermind Jason Hagler manning the computers and sound, the "shpiel" was the best yet. The night concluded at DRS with some more spirited dancing. Several Rabbeim took fifty students to the annual Yeshiva University Purim Chagigah, where the celebrations continued long into the night.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the following individuals, who generously sponsored the DRS Purim Chagigah: Vicki & Joe Eichenbaum, Gail & Marty Elsant, Ricki & Joey Genachowski, Barbara & Ari Goldsmith, Eva & Harold Hefter, Shani & Jay Lerman, Diane & Harry Ramras, Rochel & Moshe Schlusselberg, Mimi & Ari Schreier, and Deenie & Yonie Zinberg.

We thank them for helping to make this the best DRS Purim ever!

    "Passion" and Judaism, Part II
    .

Coming on the heels of our well-received student education programs dealing with our response to "The Passion," came the much-anticipated "Passion" program for parents, which took place this past Tuesday night at DRS. The program was designed to educate parents and adults in the community about some of the facts behind the birth of Christianity, and how we are to relate to it as Jews.

The over 300 people in attendance were treated to two amazing presentations: Rabbi David Friedman, DRS 10th grade Rebbe and Jewish Historian, gave a rich and detailed storyline, providing a much needed context for this time period. He was followed by Gavriel Aryeh Sanders, a former Christian Minister and Missionary, who has since converted to Judaism. He spoke about his fascinating life, and some of the monumental decisions he has made along the way. He also gave the audience an insider's look into the world of the Missionary, explaining how so much of their arguments are based on quoting Pesukim out of context. Both speakers concluded with comments directed to "The Passion," and the program concluded with a Question and Answer Session. Following Ma'ariv, many members of the audience stayed to engage in more discussions with the speakers.

The feedback from this program has been overwhelming, and we are offering a limited number of Video CD's of the event. If you are interested in receiving a copy, please email demerson@drsaddress.com. We are also providing a file with sources for further exploration of this fascinating topic, provided by Gavriel Sanders, downloadable via the link below.

    Playoff Fever Hits DRS!
    .

The Gym was a sea of green as the student body packed the Gym this past Wednesday night looking for DRS to advance in the varsity hockey playoff tournament. The students were trying to influence the game with their own version of the "Greenhouse Effect" but unfortunately it was not to be, as TABC was able to escape with a 3-1 victory.

TABC got off to a 1-0 lead in the 1st period. Mully Fein did whatever it took to keep DRS close as he turned away shot after shot of the Storm. Finally with just under one minute to play in the second period, Senior Josh Rosenfeld scored to even the game. The game was back and forth the entire 3rd period and it looked as if the game could go to Overtime. With 4:11 to play in the game TABC scored the game winning goal and later added an empty netter for insurance to win 3-1.

It was a very exciting season for the varsity and with most of the regulars returning including the rising star Mully Fein in net, the team, backed by the great DRS fans, expects to have a big year next year.

The Junior Varsity has two big games this week. The JV Basketball team plays at North Shore this Sunday at 1:00pm. See the link below for directions to the game. The teams split their two games this season and the winner of this game wins the division and advances to the Semifinals. In Hockey, the JV plays HAFTR at 8:45pm this Monday night. DRS won the season series 1-0-1 and looks to win its second game to advance to the JV championship. We hope to see you there!

    1st Ever Alumni Melava Malka!

Last Motzai Shabbat saw another DRS first. While 70 out of the 96 DRS graduates are currently studying in Eretz Yisrael, the 26 who are in the US wanted to get together to share once again the special DRS chizuk and warmth. It has always been the philosophy of our Yeshiva to keep up the relationships with our graduates, even after they leave the halls of DRS.

To answer this need, the Yeshiva hosted its first ever Alumni Melave Malka at the home of Rabbi and Mrs. Kaminetsky. Graduates from the first two graduating classes of DRS came together to reminisce, meet old friends, and share divrei torah and zemirot with their old Rabbeim. Special thanks to Rabbis Willig, Storch, Stern, and Klapholtz for dropping by, as well as to Mr. Weinstein and Mr. Lowenstien for joining in the event.

Plans are underway for an Alumni Shabbaton, and regular alumni shiurim and other activities. We are also planning a major alumni learning program for the week before Pesach, when so many of our graduates return from Eretz Yisrael for Pesach. Watch your inbox for more details!

    Upcoming Events

On Thursday, March 25, Mrs. Fishbane's 10th Grade English class will be hearing from Mr. Steven Berger, a Holocaust survivor, in a very special program. The class is finishing Elie Weisel's "Night," and is beginning a unit in History class on the Holocaust. This special guest presentation will place the information the Sophomores are learning in class within the proper context and perspective, as they hear the inspiring stories of Mr. Berger's experiences.
