We'd like to welcome our Yeshiva family back from Sukkot vacation with our next edition of the DRS Address. Thanks to DRS Address mastermind Rabbi Dov Emerson, we are breaking new ground with this issue by offering you a link to video from our Rosh Chodesh Chagiga, as well as the complete audio of an outstanding sicha delivered in our Bait Medrash by Rav Mordechai Elon, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Hakotel, who addressed all the Juniors and Seniors today.

These are exciting times at Yeshiva, as we prepare for our Parent-Son Melave Malka this Motzai Shabbat at 8:00pm, Israel Night next Wednesday night at 7:30pm, our Open House next Sunday at 1:30pm, and just around the corner in two weeks our annual Yeshiva Shabbaton. Feel free to click on the link to our beautiful November calendar (compliments of Sue Weinberg of our office staff) and print it out. Any parents who could help us out at our Open House should please send an email to rabbikam@drsaddress.com.

  • A Very Busy Yom Tov!
    .

During Sukkot, school may have been out, but the Yeshiva was busy with numerous events, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In Israel, Rabbi and Mrs. Moshe Benovitz hosted a Simchat Beit Hashoeiva at their new home in Ramat Beit Shemesh. Over 110 alumni and current students, parents and teachers joined together for an inspiring evening of ruach, singing, and Divrei Torah. The event also served as a reunion for the over 70 DRS alumni currently learning in Yeshivot in Eretz Yisrael.

During Chol Hamoed, Director of Activities Rabbi Eli Brazil led several trips for current DRS students, including an all day tiyul in Tzfat. In the evenings, he brought students to the various Simchot Beit Hashoeiva in Jerusalem.

Back in America, Rabbi Ahsher Stern hosted a Simchat Beit Hashoeiva for his ninth grade shiur at his Succah in Queens, complete with Dougie's, dancing, and divrei torah.

The Yeshiva celebrated Simchat Torah in grand style, opening the Bait Medrash to students and members of the community. The spirited singing and dancing, and the beautiful Kiddush, sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Jay Bindiger, Dr. and Mrs. Mordecai Zucker, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Sokolow, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Dworetsky, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Goldberg, and Dr. and Mrs. Marty Elsant enhanced the Yom Tov for everyone who participated.

Back in Yeshiva ... An Exciting Week!
    .

After the the Sukkot vacation, the Yeshiva was off and running, hosting a variety of exciting events.

Drug and Alcohol Education and Prevention Workshop

On Wednesday evening October 22nd, Sophomores and their parents gathered for an important workshop on the perils of drug and alcohol addiction. The event, spearheaded by DRS Director of Guidance Dr. Neal Goldberg, was highlighted by remarks by noted Addiction Counselor Chaim Brill, CSW, and Dr. Moshe Werzberger, Medical Director of Hatzolah of Flatbush. Parents and students were split up into workshops run by mental health professionals, and were given the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice on issues of concern to them.

    DRS Honor Society Induction

On Monday, October 27, 2003 DRS inducted twenty eight new members into the Achdut Chapter of the National Honor Society. Students had to have a 90 or better average and be of good moral character. All those in attendance, including faculty and current Honor Society members, were moved by the inpiring words of our guest speaker, Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt. The elegant evening was enjoyed by both the students, and their family members.

    G.O. Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan Extravaganza!

The new administration of the DRS G.O. held its first Rosh Chodesh celebration of the year on Monday. The fun-filled morning began with the delivery of Pizza Professors' famous cinnamon sticks to surprise everyone at the breakfast tables. The exciting morning continued with a sing-off between 10th grade Rebbe Rabbi Friedman And Mr. Abromowitz, of the Social Sciences Department. With Mr. A's experience on Broadway and Rabbi Freidman's history as a ba"al tefila, the sing-off was a hit among students and faculty alike. The fun filled morning concluded with spirited dancing accompanied by the DRS band. Freshman-Senior Unity at DRS!
    .

In a continuing effort to ease the Freshman class' transition to high school, the Yeshiva hosted the annual Senior Freshman Day. Part of the ongoing Senior- Freshman mentoring program, it was a huge success. Each Freshman was appointed a Senior "Big Brother," who will be there throughout the year to help him and answer any questions he may have. The day started off with time for each Freshman-Senior pair to learn in chavrusah style. The Seniors and Freshman taught each other the sources given. At the end of the chavrusah period everyone got together to hear a shiur from the senior Rabbeim, Rabbi Storch and Rabbi Balsam, based on the sources they worked on.

After the shiur the group loaded onto buses to depart to Jillians, where each group was able to enjoy an exciting day of bowling, arcades, and pizza. This trip was a good way for the Seniors and Freshman to get to know each other and develop their relationship. The trip kicked off a bond that will last for the rest of the school year.

    Thursday Club Kick Off!
    .

After the Sukkot break, the Yeshiva kicked into high gear with the start of its Thursday Club program. The clubs, of which a record 18 are being offered this year, give the students at DRS a chance to expand their horizons and spend some time each week learning about a topic of interest to them. Joining a lineup that already includes popular choices like the Cooking Club, Mock Trial, Chess Team, and the HALB Political Action Committee (H-PAC), are new and exciting options like an Investment Club, led by Rabbi Gralla, and a Karate Club. Every single student at DRS is involved in a club, and it is certainly one of the highlights of the week.

    Rav Elon Speaks @ DRS

On Thursday, the Junior and Senior grades had the unique opportunity to hear Divrei Torah from HaRav Mordechai Elon, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem. Rav Elon reminded the students of the need to apply the lessons of each week's Parsha to one's activities that week, and his words both excited and inspired those who heard them. In a DRS Address first, we are providing an audio recording of that shiur, ONLINE, in MP3 format! Simply click on the link in the QUICK LINKS section below to hear the shiur!
