From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky

While the Seniors hear presentations from Yeshivot in Eretz Yisrael, the sophomores prepare for a unique chesed and sports trip to clean a cemetery in Staten Island. The Juniors are spearheading our coat and toy drives, and the Freshmen will be introduced this weekend to their first friday night tisch at the home of Rabbi and Rebbetzin Yudin.

There will be minyanim and a seuda shelishit at Yeshiva this shabbat hosted by Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh. The crown of the coming week will be a shiur and question and answer session hosted by Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion. Good Shabbos!

  • Chess Team Kicks Off Season with a Bang
    .

The DRS chess team kicked off its season in stunning fashion, as they defeated the Rambam chess team, 4 games to 3 games in what turned out to be a thrilling match. With the match tied 3 to 3, Captain Chezky Grosberg, with masterful play and determined fortitude, came from behind in order to win his game and the match for DRS

Congratulations to Ariel Jacobs, Elihu Hershkovitz for winning their matches, and to Ari Federgrun for winning his match in under 3 minutes. Captain Chanoch Schrier, Dani Rubin, Amichai Levi and the rest of the Chess squad deserve our appreciation for their best efforts against a worthy opponent.

On Tuesday, December 2, Yeshivat Or Chaim's eighth grade class visited DRS. Now in it's third year, this trip gives students from the Queens elementary school a chance to spend some time visiting our campus and interacting with the talmidim. The Freshmen who participated had a great time, as they spent the morning learning Chavruta-style with the visiting students. Our guests took turns teaching the material they were studying and learning from our students. After the learning session, the boys heard from Rabbi Kaminetsky and Mr. Feldman, toured the campus, and ended the program with a full court basketball game and snacks.

Guidance Office Offers Financial Advice for College
    .

This past Wednesday evening, the DRS college guidance office presented an informative seminar on financing college costs. Our guest speaker was Mr. Robert Friedman, Director of Student Finances at Yeshiva University. Mr. Friedman, who comes to Y.U. from the finance office at Columbia University, addressed our parents on the various intricacies of applying for federal, state, institutional and corporate funding. He showed us how to fill out the FAFSA forms and, supported by a power point presentation, actually taught us line by line how to successfully complete it. Parents were impressed with how much funding was available to help defray the cost of college.

    DRS Athletics Update: Wiffleball Championship
    .

It was an exciting two weeks in DRS sports. The JV Basketball team won a thrilling victory over the North Shore Stars. The team is now 3-0 and atop the Eastern Division. The team will play a gritty HANC team this Motzai Shabbat at 7:30pm. The varsity Basketball team, without captain Shaya Hirtz has been struggling, losing its last two games to North Shore and Westchester. The North Shore game was nip and tuck throughout and despite David Moisa's last minute heroics the squad from Great Neck was able to prevail. The varsity looks to right the ship when they take on the HANC Hurricanes Motzai Shabbat in the second game of the doubleheader.

Both Hockey teams continue to roll. The Junior Varsity Wildcats won a difficult road game against Magen David. After falling behind 2-1 the team responded with three unanswered goals to improve their record to 4-0. Donny Ross led the way with two goals. The team gets the upcoming week off as their rematch against Magen David was postponed because of a Sephardic Shabbaton. The Varsity went on the road to post an impressive 7-2 victory over Solomon Schechter upping their record to 3-0-0-1. The team was led by Dovid Schulman's first career hat trick. The Wildcats look to keep the winning streak going in their Sunday matinee against Solomon Schechter.

Last Tuesday at "DRS Field," the Yeshiva witnessed a game for the ages, as the 2nd annual Wiffleball Tournament concluded with the championship match- up. On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, students filled the right field porch and snacked on hot dogs and drinks, provided by the G.O. Rabbi "Joe Buck" Storch entertained the crowd with his insightful announcing, and Rabbi Friedman began the events with the National Anthem.

David Eckstein's team, back for the 2nd year in the championship game, was once again overmatched by a much stronger squad led by David Liechtung. Liechtung had a typical monster game, hitting 3 home runs for the champions. This year's tournament was enjoyed by all, and the fun doesn't stop, as the inaugural DRS football tournament kicks off next week.

    Spotlight On: DRS Journalism Class

This year the Seniors at DRS were given the opportunity to participate in a unique new journalism course. Under the tutelage of Larry Gordon, the Editor of the 5 Towns Jewish Times, the students enjoy a behind-the-scenes look into the world of journalism and all that goes into creating a publication. The students have analyzed how the mainstream press covers Jewish issues, particularly concerning Israel and the difficulty in identifying objectivity and impartiality that are supposed to be fundamentals in press coverage.

Besides analyzing mainstream press, the students are afforded the unique experience of becoming published reporters, as members of the class serve as weekly contributors to the Five Towns Jewish Times. In another exciting development, members of the class have been granted press credentials to various sports and entertainment events, where they are learning firsthand what it takes to properly cover a story.
