From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky
We are eagerly anticipating the spiritual warmth of the
Chanuka lights, to light up our cold dark winter nights.
Here at Yeshiva, we are preparing to inspire the
spirit as well as kindle the excitement of the boys with
a special chagiga and other activities to mark our
victory over the forces of the ancient Greeks.
The highest form of chesed is when you help those
who
cannot repay, and our sophomore boys learned
this
lesson this week on a trip in the rain to help
restore a desecrated cemetery. Their spirits were not
dampened by the weather, and all who attended were
inspired and had a great time to boot!
Lastly, we welcome our DRS Alumni to the DRS
Address. Rabbi Brazil is coordinating the
beginning
of our Alumni Association, and we are
planning a shabbaton and some exciting events for
next
semester. It is great to have our boys back in the
Yeshiva family!
Have a great Shabbos, and a Lichtiger
Chanuka!!!
| Sophomores Restore Cemetery |
 |
This past Wednesday the sophomores spent the day
involved in a meaningful chesed opportunity and a fun
filled afternoon of sports and entertainment. The boys
heard presentations about the importance of chesed,
especially to the dead, and then helped restore
the Mount Richmond cemetery in Staten Island.
It
was an inspiring experience for all of our students.
Then, the boys were off to the Rex Plex indoor
activities center, where they enjoyed an afternoon
full of sports including football, basketball, soccer, and
roller hockey. Director of Activities Rabbi Eli Brazil,
who coordinated the program, summed it up: "This is
what DRS is all about. We combine learning and chesed
activities with fun and excitement, in a way that can't
be beat!"

| Law Class Visits New York Supreme Court |
 |
Mrs. Hefter's law class took a trip this week to
the
Supreme Court of New York in Manhattan. They
were accompanied on the tour by our Mock Trial Coach
and parent, attorney Joshua Mallin. The tour began
with a visit to the rotunda entry, where Senior Court
Clerk, Yasmin Beydoun, introduced our boys to the
landmark building. The class visited a courtroom
where
our students sat in the jury box, witness chair,
defense/prosecutor's table and the judge's desk.
They learned about the Grand Jury, the various civil
and criminal parts of the court and the cases they
hear. Finally, the students were excited to visit
the holding pen where defendants await their entry to
the courtroom. This trip was very effective, as it
taught our students the practical applications of
the law that they are studying this year.

| DRS Athletics and Activities Update |
 |
The JV Basketball team keeps on winning. They
upped their record to 5-0 with back to back wins over
the weekend. On Motzei Shabbos the stifling press was
too much for the Rambam Redmen to handle
as the Wildcats easily won by 25. The game was close
until late in the second quarter when the Cats scored 7
unanswered points in under a minute to take a
commanding 13 point halftime lead. On Sunday night it
was all Wildcats once again as the HANC
Hurricanes got their first taste of the Wildcats defense.
Judd Lindenfeld and Evan Cohen led the Cats to a
comfortable victory. The JV looks to keep their perfect
record intact when they take on local rival HAFTR
at 8:00pm Motsai Shabbos in the first game of a
doubleheader. The varsity got off to a good start
this week with an exciting win over Magen David
in the 3rd place game of the Sackin Tournament. The
seniors paced the way led by captain Shaya Hirtz. After
two tough losses early in the week, the Wildcats
bounced back with a win at North Shore. The
team trailed by 6 early in the second half but showed
its mental toughness by hanging in and winning by 13.
The hockey program was quiet this week as their
doubleheader against Rambam was postponed due to
the snow on Sunday. The games will be made up
December 30th. The Varsity suffered a tough loss to
HAFTR Tuesday night, 4-0. The players were very
appreciative of the fan support as many of the
exuberant fans came to cheer on the Wildcats with
their new noisemakers sponsored by the school G.O.
The JV plays a Chanukah special this week with
an early 6:45 game against North Shore this Monday
Night. For a video clip by cameraman Jason Hagler,

This week the '03-'04 DRS Alleycats had their first
bowling match, against the HAFTR Baggers. The
first game was extremely close all the way until the
end; however, the Baggers came through, and in the
end, the Alleycats suffered a tough loss. DRS honorable
mentions include Noam Insler, who led the Alleycats
with an average of 136 pins per match, and Yosef
Sharbat who averaged 134. Captain Zack Wertheimer
scored a respectable 111 in his losing effort as well.
The Alleycats are moving on, and getting ready to
take on Yeshivat Torat Chaim.
Finally, the DRS Chess Team was victorious on
Thursday, dominating HAFTR 7-0.

| College Bowl Team Triumphs! |
 |
|
This past Monday, the DRS Varsity College Bowl
Team came home with an outstanding record of 3 wins
and one [overtime] loss, after an afternoon-long
outing at the Young Israel of Woodmere. College
Bowl
is a league of Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Teams,
which sponsors several meets throughout the course of
the school year in various locations. At each meet, the
schools compete with each other in trivia game-
show
format, where such categories as history, culture,
science, spelling, math, geography and general trivia
are used to determine the winning team.
The team competed with four other schools and will
over the course of the year, compete with almost ten
other schools from the Metropolitan Area. The team's
first round of the meet was against SKA where DRS
came back to tie up the game and force an overtime
round, in which they lost by 2. In the second round,
DRS faced HAFTR, one of the best teams in
the league and surprisingly defeated them by
several points. During the third round, the
team dominated Rambam, defeating them by 11
points, and finished off the day with a fourth
round defeat of HANC.
The DRS Varsity College Bowl is coached by Mr.
Abramowitz, and led by Seniors Noach Lerman,
Jonathan Hefter and Josh Rosenfeld. The team is
also supported by its strong group of juniors including
Josh Blachman, David Weiss, Eli Brecher, Josh Hersch,
Binyamin Weinstein, Yair Frankel and Josh Reich. The
team promises to be a strong success during the 2003-
2004 school year, as it has already begun to prove.
