From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky

Last week we sent home all PSAT results for Sophomores and Juniors. Parents should please look at the results to see where each student's relative strengths and weaknesses are, to better prepare for the important S.A.T. Exam, which can open or close doors for students down the road. Any questions about the results should be brought to Mr. Feldman, Mr. Rahr, or Mrs. Hefter.

It is significant that Chanuka arrives right in the heart of a long cold winter, when the nights are longest. In Yeshiva, we are preparing for the light of these holy days to permeate everything we do next week, from our special Yeshiva Hallel, to our Chagiga, our Goods and Services Auction for Tzedaka, The Faculty Student Basketball game, and individual Rebbe Chagigot. May the light of this Yom Tov from the pure olive oil shine in each of our homes, and radiate the holiness of Yiddishkeit for all of our children, even in a world that often seems dark and cold.

In this context as well, please be reminded that we have regular Yeshiva this Sunday, despite the fact that this is the only day of the year that there is no bussing from Queens or Brooklyn. We ask that everyone carpool for this one day to keep torah learning strong as we prepare for Chanuka.

As Soon as Chanuka ends, we will have the great zchut of keeping the ruchniyut going by hearing a shiur from the world renowned author and lecturer, Harav Yissocher Frand, Shelita, (live and in person) on Tuesday night January 3rd, at 9pm. Please spread the word about this rare Five Towns Appearance for Rabbi Frand, so we may properly show Kavod to someone who has inspired so many over the years. If anyone can help us sponsor the event, please send an email to rabbikam@drshalb.org. The 9:00 pm presentation is for men, while he will be speaking earlier that evening for women at 7:30 pm at SKA.

Wishing you an inspiring, enjoyable, and meaningful Shabbat, and a freilichin Chanuka!

Kol Tuv,

Yisroel Kaminetsky

    By Yair Saperstein (’08)

In other amazing DRS student chesed project, DRS students are composing letters to other teenagers who were expelled from their homes in Gush Katif. Thought up by Rabbi Brazil and implemented under the watchful eye of Mrs. Fisher, DRS students are expressing their solidarity, while also giving empathy and chizuk to our displaced brothers. Mrs. Fisher commented, “One of the things that impresses me about this school is its ability to mobilize the students to carry out actions reflecting chesed and social justice.”

Torah Bowl Team In First Place

    By Barry Eichenbaum (’07)

This past Monday, the DRS Torah Bowl Team had its second meet of the year, hosted by RAMBAM. DRS played with their usual flair, managing to easily win three of their matches against RAMBAM, HAFTR, and NSHA, winning each game by at least 20 points. However, DRS lost in a very close match against HANC, being defeated by just two points. The loss now places the previously undefeated DRS team in a tie for first place with HANC, both schools boasting an impressive 7-1 record. THE DRS-HANC rivalry has developed in the past few years, with HANC becoming the only real challenge to DRS’s quest for the division title.

The powerhouse DRS team was lead by Captain Yosef Miller, who dazzled onlookers with his lightning-fast responses to the questions. The strong supporting cast of Ariel Auman, Yehuda Grossman, Barry Eichenbaum, and Yonah Saperstein further reinforced DRS along the way. This meet also witnessed the arrival of new talent to the DRS team, with freshman Meir Kirschner making an impressive debut at RAMBAM. With one more meet to go before the playoffs, the DRS Torah Bowl Team is confident that they will be able capture the division title.

DRS Athletics Update: Wildcats on the Prowl!

By Jason Strauss (’07) and Mark Rocklin (’07)

This past week has been one of the most intense, exhausting, and gratifying weeks of the ‘05- ‘06 DRS sports season. Tuesday, December 20th, was particularly action-packed with the Varsity soundly defeating Shaare Torah at an away game, and an exciting division rival hockey game against the TABC Storm. In that home game, speed and goal tending became the most important factors.

In the first period, DRS had 13 shots on goal and TABC had 8, but Max Ganz scored first off the Storm goalie, Davis. The Captain of the Storm, Aaron Malitzky, tied the game off a deflection into the net. TABC showed why they had the best record in their division with two more goals in the second period, by Malitzky and Noam Friedman. However, DRS came back strong, hustling and attacking in the last minutes of regulation with a 3 on 3 goal scored by Eli Margulies during the penalty and the tying shot by team captain Steven Genachowski. In OT, the Wildcats owned the court, but great goaltending by Davis and Yehuda Newman kept the score a tie, and 3-3 was the final score. Newman had 27 saves and Davis had 31.

Thursday night, the varsity basketball team played crosstown rival Yeshiva, Rambam. From the first quarter, DRS never gave up the lead. After eight minutes, Evan Cohen already had 6 points and put the Wildcats at a 10-7 lead. In the next quarter, DRS extended the lead with Judd Lindenfeld’s six points and eight points by Yoni Pasternak through two 3-pointers and two free throws. At half time, the score was 25-13. Josh Maslow hit for four points from the field in the third quarter, and Cohen and Shimmy Pianko each had six points in the fourth, resulting in a 48-33 final score for another DRS victory. Cohen led the team with twelve points, followed by nine by Lindenfeld and eight by Pianko. Yehoshua Joseph and Maslow each had four, Schindelheim had two, and Pollak had one. Rambam’s leaders were Weissbaum with 13 points, and Levitz with 10.

Add these great games to the 20 point victories over NSHA by both the JV and Varsity basketball squads in DRS on Motzei Shabbat, and this week becomes representative of what any sport team wants: victories, teamwork, and satisfaction. Chanukah lights are almost here, and DRS’s sports teams are burning with hope and success, already on fire.

DRS Seniors Try Their Hand At Drama

By Zeke Miller (’07), Student Editor In Chief

This week, DRS students tried to find their part in the tough world of drama. Mrs. Fisher’s 12th grade AP English class, in an exercise in recognizing tone, recited the poem “The Concerned Adolescent” by Wendy Cope. Two students in the class were assigned to be readers and two were assigned to be coaches. The readers were directed to focus on the dramatic presentation of their recitals. The rest of the class as well as DRS Assistant Principal Mr. Rahr acted as the audience and critiqued the performances. Overall the students did an excellent job and fulfilled this activity’s purpose by analyzing the poem for tone as well as meaning correctly and had a great time doing it.

JEP and DRS: A Great Tradition Continues

    By Jeremy Watman ('07)

For the past three years, DRS has been a host to the Jewish Education Program’s (JEP) Jewish Individualized Learning program (JIL), providing a warm and caring environment where unaffiliated Jewish youth can learn about their heritage. The participants come to DRS from all over the South Shore to learn one on one with a DRS student mentor. Currently 10 JEP students participate in this program, as well as DRS student mentors Michael Billet (’07), Elie Bashevkin (’06), Avi Bursky-Tammam (’07), Yoni Frohlinger (’07), Josh Gersten (’07), Yehoshua Joseph (’07), Mark Rocklin (’07), and Jeremy Watman (’07). From learning how to read Hebrew to beginning to understand the intricacies of a gemara discussion, these students benefit a great deal from having someone with whom they can learn at their own pace and form a bond that extends beyond the once-a-week class. Recently, after learning about Kashrut laws, JIL participants were able to apply their knowledge in true DRS style with (what else?) a delicious dinner from Dougie’s. The entire DRS JIL thanks the G.O. for sponsoring Dougie’s as well as the special edition “DRS Chessed” scarves.

Chess Team Romps In Match 7-0

The DRS Chess team performed amazingly at its first meet this week at HANC. The team won all of its seven matches against HANC. After a weak season last year, the team was expecting to win, but they were not expecting to sweep. Captain Dan Shekhtikhin (’06) was impressed with their dominance and was very pleased with how all the players performed. We look forward to continued success by the DRS Chess Team.

DRS Debate Team: Collective and Individual Success

This past Sunday, the DRS debate team traveled to MTA in Manhattan for their second debate of the year. The team’s newest members (Benjie Freiling, Avi Solomainzadeh, Avinoam Miodownik, Yair Saperstein, and Elie Woolf) debated for the first time at this debate and got a taste of what a debate is. The topic of the regular debate was: Resolved, that American colleges and universities should no longer include the SAT exam as a factor in college admission decisions. The team did exceptionally well, winning four debates against several schools. Benjie Freiling and Avinoam Miodownik, first time freshman debaters, won two out of their three debates. Coach Gerald Schmugar and Captains Sammy Steiner, Zeke Miller, and Elliot Schrier were very impressed with their performance. We hope that the team’s new debaters will continue to perform so remarkably well in the future.

Aside from the team’s excellent overall performance, Jordan Kantor, DRS ‘08, won third place in the extemporaneous debate. He was allowed to prepare for only fifteen minutes on the topic of torture, not knowing what the topic would be beforehand. He delivered a phenomenal and enthusiastic speech on the topic. The DRS debate team is continuing to do extraordinarily well every debate and we hope that the team will continue doing so!
