From the Desk of Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky
Our Yeshiva family experienced great simcha
throughout the Yom Tov season, both here and in
Eretz Yisroel. Hakafot at Yeshiva were as
leibedick
as ever, as was the amazing Annual Reunion Simchat
Bait Hashoeva in Eretz Yisrael, which drew over 150
alumni, talmidim, families, and friends of our Yeshiva.
I would like to especially thank Rabbi Eli Brazil for
coordinating the Israel Simchat Bait Hashoeva, as
well as personally seeing to it that $3500 of tzedaka
money was delivered to help rebuild homes in the
Galil. May the simcha we experienced propel us
to
greater heights throughout the long winter months.
Shabbos Breishis is the first shabbos of this new
zman, and a perfect time to begin life in our new
elevated spirital status. To hear this week's
parsha
shiur on the topic of the nature of Shabbos click here.
We are excitedly gearing up for our tenth annual (!)
DRS Yeshiva Shabbaton. We will be joined by the
popular band Omek Hadavar, and we have
planned a
full array of guest speakers, sports programs,
tisches, and ruach. If you have not yet sent in the
check, please do so immediately. No student will be
allowed to attend without payment.
Finally, I would like to wish Mazal Tov to Yair
Libin
('04) on his engagement to Chaviva Hershkowitz, and
to Aryeh Shapiro ('02) on his engagement to Shani
Weill. I would also like to wish a nechama to
Debbie
Niderberg on the loss of her father, Rabbi Barry Morris.
A reminder that all talmidim need to come to
Yeshiva
dressed in a white shirt and tie on Sunday and
Monday in honor of Rosh Chodesh.
Wishing you an enjoyable, relaxing, and inspiring
Shabbos......
Kol Tuv,
Yisroel Kaminetsky

(’07)
Over Chol Hamoed Sukkot, more than 150 DRS
Students, Rabbeim,
Alumni, and families descended on the OU Torah
Center in Yerushalayim for DRS’s annual Simchat Beit
Hashoeva. Everyone enjoyed a video featuring
DRS
Faculty members saying hello to the Alumni studying
in Israel. The video, produced by Yonatan Sklar,
was “a witty and fun way to give our alumni a taste
of
yeshiva back home,” according to Rabbi Eli Brazil.
Music was provided by DRS favorite Shlomo Katz.
Everyone was served world famous Big Apple Pizza
and received a complimentary DRS Sukkot Garment
Bag.

 |
|
DRS is proud and pleased to announce that four
of
its students have been named Commended Students
in the 2007 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM. The four are: Mordy Fenster,
Ephraim Leiderman,
Elliot Schrier and Jason Strauss.
These students placed among the top five
percent of
more than 1.4 million students who entered the
2007
competition by taking the PSAT in 2005.
A spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship
Program said ...“Recognition of academically talented
students and the key role played by schools in their
development is essential to the pursuit of educational
excellence in our nation. The young people being
named Commended Students have demonstrated
outstanding academic potential by their strong
performance in this highly competitive program”

During the Aseret Yemei Teshuva, DRS Students,
led by
Joey Kramer (’07), raised $3500 for distribution to
charities in Israel. This unprecedented amount
was
distributed by Rabbi Eli Brazil and several DRS
Students at the Annual DRS Simchat Beit Hashoeva
and in Tzfat. Half of the money was given to
Shaarei
Tzedek Hospital in Yerushalayim, and the other half
was distributed to families in Tzfat to help rebuild
their homes destroyed by Hizbollah rockets over the
summer. The students and alumni in Israel
especially enjoyed the trip up to Tzfat, where they
personally distributed the funds.

| Freshman Meet their Senior Mentors: Rolling With Achdut |
 |
By Yoni Mandalstam, DRS G.O. President (’07)
On Wednesday Oct. 18th, the achdut level
of DRS was once again hiked up a notch, as the
DRS
Senior Freshman mentoring program was introduced
to this year’s crop of students. Each senior is
paired
up with one or two freshmen, the goal being for the
senior to enhance the freshmen’s year. The program
began in no better place than DRS’s Beit Medrash.
Each group was given source sheets to prepare
for a
shiur given by Rabbi Storch, emphasizing the
importance of achdut, stressing what an advantage
it is for freshmen to hear and learn from the seniors.
After the shiur, the seniors along with their freshmen,
headed out to Woodmere Lanes. Bowling turned
out
to be a great environment for Senior-Freshman
bonding. Each senior-freshmen pair bowled
together,
and some groups took on others. The healthy
competition and bowling atmosphere turned out to be
great for senior-freshmen interaction. By the bus
ride
back, each freshman already felt a lot closer to his
senior. After the bowling trip, the seniors now
know
of their designated freshmen and hang out with them
in the hall ways, and look to help them out in any
way possible throughout the year. We are looking
forward to future senior-freshman programs to
enhance the school year.

| Kulanu Program Kicks Off |
 |
By Yitzi Diskind (’08)
The level of learning Thursday nights was raised
to
even higher heights, as yet another
learning program kicked off this week. Unlike the
mishmar and night seder
programs, this program combines torah learning and
chesed. We at DRS are
privileged to host the Kulana Mishmar in our beis
medrash, where Kulanu
students are paired up with DRS boys to learn about
the weekly parsha.
This
is the third year this program has been in effect, and
Rabbi Fried, who is
returning for his second year as the program
coordinator, said that “The DRS
mishmar program with Kulanu has been a wonderful
experience for both the
Kulanu students and the DRS mentors. It really
shows the true meaning of the
statement ‘Kol Yisrael areivim zeh lazeh,’ that all
Jews are working
together. It is a wonderful thing to witness and be a
part of.”
The two part program starts at eight o’clock, where
the boys all learn for 45 minutes
with material given to them by Rabbi Fried, and must
attempt to find an
answer for the weekly question. After the learning,
both the DRS and Kulanu
students join with the night seder boys for 15
minutes of a well deserved
Dougie’s snack. Not only is this program an important
chesed, but also is an
enjoyable experience for all parties involved.

Math Team Squares off for First Meet of the Year |
|
|
|
By Jason Strauss (’07)
On Tuesday, DRS juniors and seniors not
only competed in the highly regarded Yeshiva math
competition, but also welcomed back Mr.
Weinstein
as their coach. Over twenty students
participated in
a contest with other neighborhood Yeshivot,
including HAFTR, SKA, and Rambam. Each student
receives six questions, which are answered two at a
time in ten-minute intervals. There will be a total of
five competitions and the school with the most
questions answered correctly wins. There are also
individual awards, such as the one Ariel Jacob
received last year. The team is off to a great
start,
with four students answering four out of six
correctly, as well as several more getting three
correct. Mr. Weinstein expects a winning DRS Math
Team this year, and we look forward to covering
their success in the DRS Address.
